How this valuation is worked out

Staffing firms are priced on earnings, with gross profit rather than gross billings used to judge size. Temporary and contract placement revenue prices higher than one-off direct-hire fees, and buyers set a working capital peg because payroll runs ahead of collections.

A worked example

A light-industrial firm with $8M of billings, $1.6M of gross profit and $640K of adjusted earnings, 85% temp revenue and no client above 20%. At 4× that is roughly $2.6M, before the working capital peg is settled.

Multiple ranges reviewed September 2026, based on offers buyers in our network are making today. They are a guide, not a quote — see how the process works.

What moves your number

  • Gross profit dollars and spread percentage, not gross billings
  • Temp and contract revenue versus one-off direct-hire fees
  • Client concentration and any MSP or VMS relationships
  • Recruiter team stability and producer concentration

Common questions

Why does gross profit matter more than billings?

Because pass-through wages inflate billings. Two firms with identical billings can differ hugely in spread, and the spread is what a buyer earns.

How does payroll funding affect the deal?

Buyers set a working capital requirement at closing to cover payroll before receivables land. That peg can move real money at the closing table.

Is worker classification a diligence issue?

Yes. Contractor classification, overtime and I-9 records are reviewed closely, and problems there affect price or structure.
