How this valuation is worked out
Alarm companies are traded two ways: a multiple of recurring monthly revenue for the account base, and a multiple of earnings for the whole business including installation work. Attrition, contract terms and the quality of the accounts drive both.
A worked example
A company with $42K of recurring monthly revenue, 9% annual attrition and $610K of EBITDA including install work. The account base at 30× RMR is roughly $1.26M, while 6–7× EBITDA for the whole business suggests $3.7M–$4.3M.

What moves your number

- Contract length, auto-renewal and whether accounts are assignable
- Commercial versus residential mix and account credit quality
- Installation revenue, which is valued well below monitoring revenue

Common questions
What is an RMR multiple?
The price paid per dollar of recurring monthly revenue for a portfolio of monitored accounts. It reflects contract terms, attrition and account quality.
Why is install revenue worth less?
Because it does not repeat. Buyers value the monitoring stream first and treat installation as a lower-multiple service business.
Does contracted monitoring have to be assignable?
It matters enormously. Accounts that cannot be assigned to a new owner without customer consent are worth materially less.
