How this valuation is worked out
The quick rule of thumb is a percentage of AUM — currently 1.5% to 3.0% — but the real driver is recurring revenue: most practices settle between 2 and 3 times recurring fee income, or 6 to 10 times EBITDA for larger firms.
A worked example
$60M of AUM at a 0.9% average fee earns $540K of annual revenue. Priced at 2.0% of AUM that is $1.2M — equivalent to roughly 2.2× revenue. Younger clients, fee-only billing and 95%+ retention support the top of the 1.5%–3.0% band.

Common questions
Percentage of AUM or multiple of revenue?
Both are used. Percentage of AUM is a quick check; a multiple of recurring revenue or EBITDA is what serious buyers underwrite.
Does my custodian matter?
It affects how smooth the transition is, and messy repapering can cost you a little on price.
How long is a typical transition?
Most advisor deals include a one to three year transition with payment tied to client retention.
