How this valuation is worked out
Goodwill is commonly 3 to 5 times adjusted earnings. Inventory is agreed separately, parts and equipment are counted, and owned property is appraised on its own.
A worked example
A two-line dealership with $7.2M of revenue, 38% of gross profit from parts and service, and $480K of adjusted earnings. At 4× that is roughly $1.9M of goodwill, plus current inventory at agreed value — with non-current units written down before the count.
Multiple ranges reviewed September 2026, based on offers buyers in our network are making today. They are a guide, not a quote — see how the process works.
What moves your number
- Which franchise lines you hold and whether the makers approve your buyer
- Parts, accessories and service margin as a share of gross profit
- Aged, non-current units, which buyers discount hard
- Finance and insurance income and certified technician retention

Common questions
How is aged inventory handled?
Non-current units are usually written down to what they will realistically sell for, not carried at cost.
Do multiple franchise lines help?
Usually yes, because they smooth seasonality — but each maker has to approve the buyer separately.
Is my building included?
Only if you own it, and it is appraised as real estate rather than folded into the earnings multiple.
