How this valuation is worked out

Independent pharmacies trade at roughly 3 to 5 times EBITDA, plus inventory at cost. The old percentage-of-revenue rule of thumb is unreliable now, because reimbursement pressure and DIR fees mean two pharmacies with the same revenue can earn very different profit.

A worked example

A pharmacy filling about 180 scripts a day with $380K of EBITDA. At 3.5–4× that is $1.33M–$1.52M for the business, with roughly $310K of inventory paid for separately at closing.

Multiple ranges reviewed September 2026, based on offers buyers in our network are making today. They are a guide, not a quote — see how the process works.

What moves your number

  • Script volume and gross profit per script, not revenue alone
  • Payer mix and exposure to a single PBM contract
  • Higher-margin services: compounding, immunisations, long-term care
  • Lease terms and whether a chain wants the files or the going concern

Common questions

Is inventory included in the range?

No. It is counted at closing and paid for separately, usually at or near cost.

What is a file buy?

A chain buying your patient files to move the scripts to a nearby store. It is priced per file, not on EBITDA, and usually nets less than a going-concern sale.

How do DIR fees affect value?

They are settled months after dispensing, so buyers normalise earnings for them rather than taking trailing profit at face value.
