How this valuation is worked out

Painting companies are priced on seller's discretionary earnings. Buyers pay most for a repeatable lead engine, trained crews and a signed backlog — and least for a business where the owner personally estimates and sells every job.

A worked example

A residential repaint company with $1.6M of revenue, $290K of SDE, two employee crews and a full-time estimator. At 3.5× that is roughly $1.01M, with signed backlog settled separately at closing.

Multiple ranges reviewed September 2026, based on offers buyers in our network are making today. They are a guide, not a quote — see how the process works.

What moves your number

  • Repeat and referral flow, plus a working lead source
  • Signed backlog and contracts in progress at closing
  • Employee crews versus subcontractors, and classification records
  • Estimating accuracy and gross margin per job

Common questions

Does new construction work sell for less than repaints?

Often. Builder work is lower margin and concentrated with a few general contractors, while residential repaint work is higher margin and more diversified.

How is work in progress handled?

Buyers value signed backlog separately and usually settle deposits and partially completed jobs at closing.

What if I do the estimating myself?

Buyers will discount for it, or ask you to stay through a transition. Training an estimator before selling directly protects the price.
