How this valuation is worked out

Practices with an associate OD and a manager in place are priced on EBITDA at roughly 3.5 to 6 times. Owner-doctor practices are priced on SDE at about 2 to 3.5 times, after the owner's pay is normalised to a market associate salary. Optical inventory is usually paid for separately.

A worked example

A practice collecting $1.3M with $250K of EBITDA after a market associate salary for the owner OD. At 4–5× that is $1.0M–$1.25M, with optical inventory counted and paid for separately at cost.

Multiple ranges reviewed September 2026, based on offers buyers in our network are making today. They are a guide, not a quote — see how the process works.

Common questions

Is optical revenue valued the same as exams?

Not quite. Medical and exam revenue is usually seen as stickier; optical retail is valuable but more exposed to online competition.

Is inventory included?

Usually it is counted and paid for separately at cost, on top of the price for the practice.

Who buys optometry practices?

Corporate and private-equity-backed optical groups, and individual ODs using SBA financing.
