How this valuation is worked out

Manufacturers and machine shops are commonly priced at roughly 3.5 to 6.5 times EBITDA, with smaller owner-run shops closer to an SDE multiple. Buyers look at customer concentration, margin stability, equipment age and whether skilled staff will stay.

A worked example

A machine shop with $4.2M of revenue and $600K of EBITDA, no customer above 15% of sales and CNC equipment averaging seven years old. At 4.5–5× that is $2.7M–$3.0M.

Common questions

What multiple do machine shops sell for?

Commonly 3.5 to 6.5 times EBITDA, with smaller shops priced nearer 3 times SDE.

How is equipment valued?

Usually as part of the operating business, with an appraisal if the asset base is large relative to earnings.

Does one big customer hurt the price?

Yes. A customer above roughly 20% of revenue is a common reason buyers lower the multiple or ask for an earnout.
