How this valuation is worked out
Law firms are commonly priced at roughly 0.5 to 1.5 times annual collections, or about 1 to 3 times SDE. Practice area, client concentration and how much work depends on you personally decide where you land. Check your state bar's rules on selling a practice before you start.
A worked example
A solo estate planning practice with $650K of collections and $220K of SDE. At 0.8–1.0× collections that is $520K–$650K, while 1.5–2× SDE suggests $330K–$440K — with work in progress and receivables valued separately.

Common questions
What multiple do law firms sell for?
Roughly 0.5 to 1.5 times annual collections, or about 1 to 3 times SDE, depending on practice area and transferability.
Can I sell a law practice at all?
Yes, but most states have specific ethics rules covering client notice and consent. Confirm the rule with your own state bar before structuring anything.
How are contingency cases valued?
Case by case, based on expected settlement value, timing, costs advanced and risk — not on a simple multiple of past collections.
