How this valuation is worked out
Multiply annual premium by your average commission rate to get commission income, then apply the market multiple — currently around 2.0 to 3.5 times for property and casualty. Retention, account size and how personally attached clients are to you decide where in that range you land.
A worked example
A P&C book producing $250K of annual commission with 90% retention. At 2.0–3.5× commission the range is $500K–$875K; personal lines with high retention and clean loss ratios sit near the middle to top.

What moves your number
- Retention rate, with 90%+ supporting the top of the range
- Average account size — fewer, larger accounts price better
- Commercial lines mix versus personal auto and home
- Whether clients follow the agency or follow you
