How this valuation is worked out
Dealerships are bought as goodwill plus assets. Goodwill is commonly 3 to 5 times adjusted earnings, then inventory is settled at agreed value, parts and equipment are counted, and any owned property is appraised separately.
A worked example
A single-location dealership with $9.4M of revenue, a busy service department and $610K of adjusted earnings. At 4× that is roughly $2.4M of goodwill, plus boat inventory agreed separately, plus parts and equipment, with the waterfront property appraised on its own.
Multiple ranges reviewed September 2026, based on offers buyers in our network are making today. They are a guide, not a quote — see how the process works.
What moves your number
- Manufacturer franchise agreements and whether the brand approves your buyer
- Service and parts departments, which carry the steady margin
- Aged inventory and floorplan exposure
- Technician retention and any slip, storage or marina income

Common questions
Is inventory part of the multiple?
No. Boats in stock are valued separately at an agreed figure and added to the goodwill number.
Does my franchise transfer?
Only with the manufacturer's approval. Talk to your brand representatives before you go far with a buyer.
Why is service worth more than unit sales?
Because it repeats and holds margin through slow seasons, while new-unit margin moves with the market.
